Asian American Consumers and
Technology
-
Asian
Americans are the most wired in the USA. As a
rule, Asian-American users are generally younger, more
experienced, and more likely to access online news and other
information than other groups: e.g., 68% usage
for school research, compared to 51% for white users.
-
-
A 2001 study released by the Pew Internet & American
Life Project on Asian Americans and the Internet found that “fully 75% of
Asian-Americans have gone online at one time or another.” Fast forward
to 2007 and the numbers from InterTrend survey indicated that
nation-wide, 90% of Asian Americans are online. The InterTrend
survey involved a substantial number of non-English speaking
users, which makes the Asian American segment unique because
typically it is the primarily English speaking demographic that
uses online technologies over the immigrant population for whom
English is not their first language.

Cybercitizen demographics
-
The 2001 Pew Study found that online adult internet users
came from these demographic groups:
 |
58% White
|
 |
50% of English speaking Hispanics |
 |
43% of African Americans |
 |
75%
Asian Americans |

By 2009 these numbers would be far higher for all
groups involved. For overall Internet usage, refer to the section on
this website under Services / Internet Marketing.
-
- Potential reasons
-
Education - Asian Americans that were online had
higher levels of education and income that correlated with access to the
Internet.
-
- Frequency of daily usage
-
Asian-Americans are frequent Internet users. Fully 70% of Asian- American
users go online on a typical day. This is significantly higher than any
other group, the next highest being online whites, 58% of whom log on during
an average day. Of the total American population on the Internet, just over
half logs onto the Internet daily.
-
-
As early adopters,
Asian Asian-Americans have also been online longer than their peers.
- 80% have
been online for over 2 years
- over 50%
have more than 3 years of online experience.
-
About 78% of
Asians use a computer, which represents over 6 million people. This is a
much higher proportion of computer users than the 65% of white, the 55% of
African-American, and the 63% of Hispanic adults who say they use computers.
- Behavioral usage
-
Unlike occasional Internet users who go online
infrequently, when Asian Americans log into the internet, they stay online
longer, staying connected for longer durations than anyone else. Of this
group, about 15% spend four or more hours connected.
-
-
Technology Integration
-
Asian-Americans have integrated the Internet as a
integral part of their daily lives, using the Internet for everything from doing research, e-commerce purchases, research related
to major life activities, or for fun.
On the Internet
-
On
December 13, 2001, the Pew Research Center released a study
indicating that Asian Americans are the most wired in the
USA.
Behavioral aspects indicate that Asian American users have
made the Internet an integral part of their daily lives, and
are far more likely to use the Internet on a daily basis than
ANY other ethnic or non-ethnic group. As a
rule, Asian-American users are generally younger, more
experienced, and more likely to access online news and other
information than other groups: e.g., 68% usage
for school research, compared to 51% for white users.
